New Poll Finds Americans Overwhelmingly Blame Trump More Than Democrats for Shutdown

Negotiations are at a standstill and no more talks are scheduled for the weekend or early next week. The poll finds that 42 per cent of Democrats who oppose the wall say congressional Democrats should refuse to budge even if it extends the shutdown; 37 per cent say they should compromise with Trump. At least one airport planned to close a concourse as absences rose among security screeners who haven't received their wages.

Johnson also suggested that Congress pass legislation to pay federal employees who are now working without pay.

Trump has requested $5.6 billion in funding for the wall, which the Democrats have staunchly opposed. "That's my recommendation", added Graham, who has publicly pushed Trump to use his authority to declare a national emergency to build the wall.

More Americans-54%-still say they oppose a border wall.

President Donald Trump is pushing back against the idea that he doesn't have a strategy to end the partial government shutdown, now into its fourth week. He said the president had accepted a border security package that included money for a wall, then changed his mind.

The previous record dates back to the Clinton administration when a 21-day shutdown resulted from a clash between President Bill Clinton and the GOP Congress that lasted from December 1995 to January 1996. That ended when congressional Republicans agreed to a short-term funding bill for closed agencies that was later extended.

Mr Trump told Pirro he had not left the White House in months except for recent trips to Iraq and Germany and was "ready, willing and able to get a deal done".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a leading Democratic negotiator, insists that Trump reopen the government first. "But we need money for that barrier", Trump said.

In a sign that Trump may be losing the confidence of a key segment of his base, his disapproval rating among whites without a college degree has climbed to 47 percent, while just 45 percent approve. With the exception of certain local employees overseas, the rest are working without pay, like those tasked with supporting Pompeo's trip, which has thus far taken him to Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Bahrain, with additional stops to come.

Graham had earlier told reporters he would support Trump declaring an emergency in order to get the desired funds for dealing with what Trump claims is an immigration crisis on the southern U.S. border, voicing frustration that Democrats in the past had voted in favor of funding some barriers on the border yet have so far resisted Trump's demand.

Jennifer Lawless, a politics professor at the University of Virginia, said she believed Mr Trump and Republicans would lose the game of chicken as furloughed workers, travellers, tourists and others "experience the consequences of political dysfunction firsthand".

His main reason for this optimism centers on a deal that Democrats could strike with Republicans that would protect Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) recipients in return for wall funding.

"It's a bad precedent", Republican Senator Chuck Grassley said on CNBC. The White House has said the president will veto the funding legislation unless his demands for a border wall are met. While more unaccompanied children and families have recently come to the border, the total number of illegal immigrants crossing from Mexico is historically low. Part of that promise was a Wall at the Southern Border. Nine of 15 cabinet-level departments were not funded. Representative Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican, has also suggested using that money or other discretionary fees.
