The Prime Minister has continually said her terms represent a "good deal" and that no-deal exit is not her preferred outcome. Instead, she has pressed ahead with a vote she looks set to lose after failing to win over her nominal Northern Irish allies.

"The real question for Members of Parliament who voted to give the public a say through the European referendum in 2016, who voted in large numbers to trigger Article 50, is the effect of triggering Article 50 is you either have a deal and the EU have been clear that the only deal on the table is the PM's deal".

"I disagree with that, and so I think do the vast majority of Members of Parliament".

Later, the former Tory minister Crispin Blunt said many MPs had come to the conclusion the "referee is no longer neutral" and urged Mr Bercow to "reflect" on his position.

Rather than warming to Mrs May's deal since then, MPs have tried to wrest control of Brexit from the Government and put it in the hands of Parliament.

Pro-EU Conservative politician Dominic Grieve, who proposed the measure, said it was meant to speed up decisions, to help avoid a no-deal Brexit and "the calamitous consequences that would follow on from it".

The vote on the amendment was passed due to a number of Tory MPs rebelling against the whip, with the government losing by 11 votes, with 297 MPs voting with them and 308 against. Labour's spokesman earlier said the party was not seeking an extension to Article 50.

The so-called "meaningful vote" on Theresa May's withdrawal agreement will take place on Tuesday January 15, Downing Street has confirmed.

MPs will vote on the deal she negotiated by the European Union on January 15 after days of debate in Parliament, Downing Street confirmed today.Mr Barclay will open the debate, and the Prime Minister will deliver the closing speech.

Rebellious Conservative MPs teamed up with opposition party Labour on Wednesday to vote for a motion created to prevent the government delaying key decisions on Brexit.

John Bercow has been accused of "unilaterally changing" parliamentary rules in the wake of a row over a government Brexit defeat in Parliament.

In an effort to assuage MPs concerns, May has lobbied her European counterparts and officials in Brussels to make concessions on the clause.

May insisted Wednesday that "further clarification" from the European Union was possible, "and those talks will continue over the next few days".

That suggestion did little to win over the DUP.

But northern Irish politicians were swift to dismiss her proposals to offer Northern Ireland a "strong voice and role in any decision to bring the backstop into effect". Wilson, one of 10 DUP lawmakers propping up May's minority government, described her deal as "ruinous".

May pulled a vote on the deal last month, admitting it would be defeated, and promised to seek "legal and political assurances" from the EU.

"I don't think the British public are served by fantasies about magical, alternative deals that are somehow going to spring out of a cupboard in Brussels", Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington told BBC radio. But there is little indication that many MPs have been swayed and the deal is nearly certain to be defeated on Tuesday. Ms.
