Selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in 1996, Fincke was first assigned to the International Space Station Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) arena at the Johnson Space Center and also served as a Crew Test Support Team member in Russian Federation for Expeditions 4 and 6.

22 that it is replacing an astronaut who was scheduled to fly on a commercial crew test flight later this year because of a medical issue. Previously, Fincke served as an International Space Station (ISS) flight engineer on Expedition 9, and commanded the ISS for Expedition 18. NASA has changed the person who was there in Boeing's first launch with a crew.

NASA says a medical issue is forcing a switch in the crew for the Boeing Starliner space taxi's first crewed test flight to the International Space Station, now scheduled for no earlier than August. According to a Sputnik source, its unmanned launch to the International Space Station (ISS) is scheduled for March 28, while the manned flight, which Fincke will take part in, is slated for August 27.

The announcement came via the agency's website, noting that Eric Boe, a two-time Space Shuttle astronaut, was no longer assigned to the CST-100 Starliner test mission. NASA reported today that astronaut Eric Boe will no longer be flying on the mission because of unspecified "medical reasons".

The Starliner's Crew Flight Test will be the first time that the new spacecraft, which is being developed and built by Boeing as part of Nasa's Commercial Crew Programme, is launched into space with humans on board. The shuttle flight was STS-134, the final voyage of the shuttle Endeavour. That flight, known as Demonstration Mission-1 or DM-1, would be followed in the June time frame by a crewed DM-2 test flight with NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Doug Hurley. During that mission, Fincke broke the previous USA record for longest time in space. So far, the Pennsylvania native has spent 382 days in space and performed nine spacewalks.

Fincke carries plenty of spaceflight experience, as this will be his fourth trip to space. The latter flight was the last mission of the shuttle Discovery before its retirement, as the shuttle program wound down. Boe was supposed to be on that critical flight for Boeing, alongside NASA astronaut Nicole Mann and Chris Ferguson, a former NASA astronaut who presently works at Boeing. However, NASA's contract with Roscosmos is expected to expire in November 2019.
