Aliens phoning home? Mysterious deep-space radio signals are more frequent than we thought A fantastically bright repeating radio signal from billions of light-years away has been discovered, only the second of its kind ever found. Scientists now believe these signals are much more common than previously thought. Several weeks ago, however, 13 new bursts were detected within two months.

Assistant professor of physics Laura Newburgh is part of a Canadian-led experiment that has detected the second-known example of a repeating fast radio burst (FRB) originating far outside the Milky Way galaxy. Moreover, the CHIME scientists, in this study suggest that FRBs are more common than our current technology is able to reflect.

"This is done using clever algorithms and a couple of giant computer clusters that sit beside the telescope and crunch away at the data in real time", he explained.

The odd beams are known as fast radio bursts (FRBs) - and last only a millisecond. And when there are increased sources and more repeaters for the goal of conducting a study, the cosmic puzzles would become easier for them to have better understanding and it would then be clear that what the actual source of those blasts was. Previous studies have suggested that FRBs may be the remnants of distant supernovas, or radiation spewed out by supermassive black holes. "But it has to be in some special place to give us all the scattering that we see".

Scientists have been able to find about 60 single FRBs and two that repeat, the BBC reported.

CHIME, which is short for Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, is a type of interferometric radio telescope featuring half-cylinder dishes that observe the same section of sky every day. And among them, a FRB flashed repeatedly six times in a row.

The discovery is a sign that there could be even more repeating FRBs out there waiting to be found - and maybe even an answer to the mystery of their source. CHIME can only record signals between 400 MHz and 800 MHz. "There are some models where intrinsically the source can't produce anything below a certain frequency", team member Arun Naidu of McGill University said in a statement. The detection of these repeated signals could nevertheless help us to see a little more clearly.

Professor Avi Loeb, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in the United States, has previously said that FRBs could potentally be evidence of advanced alien technology.

The FRBs show various temporal scattering behaviours, with the majority significantly scattered, and some apparently unscattered to within measurement uncertainty even at our lowest frequencies.
