Matt Kuchar Extends Lead At Sony Open

  • Bryson De Chambeau surged into a share of fifth after a super 63

"The other two, I just hit the shot I was trying to see and it was going at the hole".

"It was a really good day", said Kuchar, who has won eight times on the PGA Tour.

Peter Jung, who qualified by winning an amateur tournament, played in his first PGA Tour event.

Corey Conners of Canada, who got into the field through a Monday qualifier, had a 64-64 weekend and was among four players who tied for third, though none had a serious chance of challenging what amounted to a two-player race at the top.

Kuchar gave a small fist pump as his golf ball dropped down the center of the cup, his lead over Andrew Putnam three shots large and victory all but secured at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The victor of the Mayakoba Classic in Mexico in November, world No.32 Kuchar briefly surrendered the lead to Putnam after three bogeys in his first five holes on Sunday.

Putnam, who played college golf at Pepperdine and claimed his first PGA Tour victory a year ago in the Barracuda Championship, capped his 67 with an eight-foot birdie putt on the last hole. Putnam missed an 8-foot birdie attempt on No. 18. Putnam went first and it rolled out to 2 inches for birdie.

Kuchar shot 22-under 258 for the week in Honolulu and overcame a rocky final-round start to lock up the four-shot win. "I didn't find myself in any trouble".

"Didn't feel as easy as the first two days", Putnam said.

After back-to-back 63s, the American produced a flawless round on day three, firing four birdies to move to 18 under overall and top of the pack after 54 holes.

Andrew was tough there.

Jordan Spieth (MC): Spieth bounced back with a 66 following his 73 in Round 1, but it wasn't enough to make the cut (which he missed by one).

I get where he's coming from and know that he's just trying to build confidence, but I might have to amend my "Spieth will win three times in 2019" take in a few weeks.

Matt Kuchar kept another clean card and shot a 4-under 66 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sony Open as he goes for his second victory this season on the PGA Tour.

DeChambeau's round jumped him up into a nine-way tie for fifth place at 11 under, alongside the likes of Marc Leishman (68) and Charles Howell III (64). He also beat Patrick Reed and Ian Poulter, who are both only 15 years younger than Love but also played in the Ryder Cup.

"Honestly, I didn't think about it at all until after the third one went in", Reavie added.
