  • Canada jobless rate unchanged at 5.6 percent

The unemployment rate in New Brunswick rose to 8.4 per cent in December as employment decreased by 3,100, according to the latest labour force survey released by Statistics Canada Friday.

In 2018, employment increased by 0.9 per cent in Canada.

Some analysts saw promising signs in Friday's wage data, which marked the end of a six-month streak of slowdowns. Canada shed 18,900 full-time jobs and added 46,400 less desirable self-employed positions.

The net gain of 9,300 for the month was deemed too low by Statistics Canada to be statistically significant. Governor Stephen Poloz said on December 17 that the pace of tightening could be interrupted or sped up depending on the economic circumstances. This follows a net gain of 5,500 positions in November, which knocked the unemployment rate down by 0.7 points.

RED DEER- Stats Canada numbers show the Red Deer area unemployment rate at 4.4 per cent in December, the lowest in Alberta and a full per cent drop from 5.4 per cent in November.

Economists had expected about 5,500 new jobs and an unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent.

Across the country in 2018, Statistics Canada reported employment growth by 163,000 or 0.9 per cent, a pace slower when compared with both 2017 and 2016, at 2.3 and 1.2 per cent, respectively.

In B.C., the province saw an increase of 44,000 jobs in 2018, nearly entirely full-time work.

"Following strong growth in both goods and service industries in 2017, overall employment gains in 2018 were recorded nearly entirely in service industries, including health care and social assistance (plus 74,000 or plus 3.1 per cent); business, building and other support services (plus 59,000 or plus 7.8 per cent); transportation and warehousing (plus 56,000 or plus 5.7 per cent); and educational services (plus 33,000 or plus 2.6 per cent)".

In 2018, employment for women aged 25 to 54 grew by 125,600 positions or 2.2 per cent, compared to an increase of 60,600 jobs or one per cent for men in the same age category.
