In an interview published Thursday in the New York Times, King, who has represented a district in northwest Iowa since 2003, said he wondered how white supremacy had "become offensive".
Republican Senator Tim Scott of SC slammed GOP "silence" about comments such as King's in a Washington Post opinion piece on Friday, which Scalise recommended that King read.
Yet, when Americans hear people like King claim that white nationalists and white supremacists are not offensive, it has a negative impact on the entire Republican party. For example, Scott mentioned that over the past two years, "Republicans have focused on spreading opportunity, and it has paid dividends: From the creation of opportunity zones in some of our nation's most distressed communities to unbelievable job-creation statistics and low unemployment rates, there's no doubt that the future is brightening for many Americans". "Anything less than these substantive actions is another tacit acceptance of racism from the Republican Party", Bass said.
"Republicans should make clear Mr. King is no longer welcomed in their party or Congress".
McCarthy explained that there are a number of steps he can take to pressure King for his statements.
"If Republicans really believe these racist statements have no place in our government, then their party must offer more than shallow temporary statements of condemnation", CBC Chairwoman Rep. King asked. "Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?"
King, who has long history of statements that have been criticized as racist, later released a statement labeling white supremacy an "evil ideology". "That is not the America that I know".
King serves on the Agriculture, Small Business and Judiciary committees, and chairs Judiciary's subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Sunday told CBS' "Face The Nation" that he is meeting with King on Monday and that "action will be taken". We are a great nation and this divisiveness is hurting everyone. "Further, I condemn anyone that supports this evil and bigoted ideology which saw in its ultimate expression the systematic murder of 6 million innocent Jewish lives", he said.
In his interview with the Times, King said he supports immigrants of various races legally entering the USA ― so long as American culture stays white and European.
