In India, a significant drop in consumer demand together with high inventory remaining in the channels led to a stronger than expected decline in the consumer and SMB segments, while Intel supply shortages led to a drop in sales to the enterprise customers. Lenovo also had a strong quarter in the USA and has recorded three consecutive quarters of double-digit year-over-year shipment growth.

Mac shipments themselves declined 3.8 percents over Q4 and declined 2.1 percent over the year.

PC shipments saw their biggest year-on-year dip since 2016 in Q4 2018, according to new reports issued by market research firms IDC and Gartner. Both desktop and notebook shipments saw year-on-year declines in 4Q18.

Just when the PC market found its footing the us trade war with China and processor shortages put the kibosh on unit sales, according to stats from both IDC and Gartner.

The top three vendors boosted their share of the global PC market as Lenovo, HP and Dell accounted for 63% of PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2018, up from 59% in the fourth quarter of 2017.

PC sales struggle yet again

Demand could, Kitagawa said, be pushed forward into 2019 "if CPU availability improves". According to the market research company, worldwide PC shipments reached 68.1 million in Q4, a 3.7% decline year-on-year. The results slightly outperformed the forecast, which called for a decline of 4.7%, but also produced the largest year-on-year decline since the third quarter of 2016 (3Q16) and capped the full year at a almost flat rate of -0.4%.

"Political and economic uncertainties in some countries dampened PC demand", Ms. Kitagawa said.

For the holiday period, Gartner has worldwide PC shipments at 68.6 million units, down 4.3 percent YoY.

ZDNet, on the other hand, lays the blame on the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. Lastly, Apple retained the same fourth position with year-on-year growth of -3.8 percent, and Acer obtained the fifth position. Gartner said that holiday sales were no longer a major factor driving consumer demand for PCs. Dell is third with 10.9 million units sold and 15.9% share, while Apple is only fourth, and far behind the top three, with just 4.9 million units shipped during the quarter and a share of just 7.2%, more than half of Dell.
