  • New Year's Eve revellers gather along the foreshore in Sydney ahead of the fireworks

London celebrated the New Year on Tuesday with its world-famous fireworks, as the British capital is seeking to boost its image as an open city against the backdrop of new relationship with the European Union (EU).

Among the first places to see January 1 were Samoa and Kiribati, with Pacific Ocean nations beginning the New Year over 24 hours before the last-mainly outlying islands belonging to the USA, such as Baker Island and Howland Island.

Thunderstorms early Monday evening threatened the yearly fireworks show in Sydney, but an estimated one million people gathered around various points in the Australia's largest city to witness the traditional fireworks show.

In Sydney, which is the biggest city in the country, around 1.5 million people packed into Sydney Harbor to watch a huge fireworks display, news.com.au reports.

Around 3,000 people, including overseas Chinese, attended an ancestor-worship ceremony just before new year, at the Mausoleum of Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor. Australia, one of the countries to welcome the New Year was caught in an embarrassing situation after a lighting projection flashed, "Happy New Year 2018!" in front of revellers waiting to ring in New Year 2019.

The Big Ben clock tower at Westminster, which has been silenced for more than a year except for special occasions due to an extensive refurbishment, also rang out to welcome 2019.

Dozens of people have been injured ahead of New Year's Eve, when many across the Philippines set off powerful firecrackers in one of Asia's most violent celebrations despite a government scare campaign and threats of arrests.

Many cities across the globe saw fireworks illuminate their signature sights, like in London, where bright lights danced around the London Eye Ferris wheel.

City authorities made a decision to replace the usual fireworks with a laser show for environmental reasons. That is expected to increase as Filipinos usher in 2019. He ramped up his trade war with China, quit the Iran nuclear deal, moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and met his North Korean counterpart Kim Jong Un for a summit, the results of which have divided commentators.

Major sporting events on the calendar include the cricket World Cup in England, the Rugby World Cup in Japan and the athletics World Championships in Qatar.
