Fulton's Brian Dozier, Nationals agree to $9M, 1-year deal

  • Former Twin Brian Dozier will remain in the Senior Circuit

The Nationals have been busy this offseason, signing pitchers Patrick Corbin and Anibal Sanchez.

While the Dodgers badly needed production at second base, Dozier was unable to give it to them and by the start of the postseason, he was essentially a bench player.

The free agent infielder and the Nationals agreed to a US$9-million, one-year contract, subject to the successful completion of a physical exam, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Thursday. However, Dozier had a world of trouble this past season, as his OPS dropped below.700. The 31-year-old spent last season with the Minnesota Twins and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the latter of whom he joined at the trade deadline. Even with a disappointing.215 average last season, Dozier still managed to hit 21 home runs and 30 doubles.

If Dozier can bring his average back up and continue hitting for power, he should be a nice addition to Washington's lineup.

Bringing him aboard would be the latest in a flurry of off-season moves by Washington, which finished second in the NL East behind the Atlanta Braves and missed the playoffs previous year. Dozier is expected to replace Wilmer Difo and Daniel Murphy for Washington's starting spot. Dozier and the Washington Nationals are a very good match for one another and both are hoping to see Dozier return to turning on pitches that are launched over the left field fence routinely as they both look for a return to the playoffs in 2019. In that sense, it was best for the Nationals to sign a second baseman to a one-year deal.
