Five things to know about the LNG pipeline protest in northern BC

The mood at the rally was one of determination, as the group showed solidarity with the Wet'suwet'en First Nation.

RCMP were expected to dismantle another camp nearby on Tuesday.

Police have set up an "exclusionary zone" to prevent access to the area - and have told those trying to access the roads they face arrest if they attempt to enter. Two camps were erected near a bridge crossing the company said is needed to access the construction site of the proposed natural gas pipeline. It's part of a $40-billion project that was approved by the federal and provincial governments in October. "The hereditary chiefs are".

Wickham further states one Hereditary Chief from each of the five Wet'suwet'en nations was invited to come and speak with RCMP liaisons.

"We wanted to show that even though the Unist'ot'en and Gidimt'en are from separate clans, all the chiefs have been opposed to pipelines in our territories for years and years and years", she said.

The federal government has a responsibility to Indigenous Peoples in Canada, Saganash added.

Ridsdale said that a 72-year-old woman was among those arrested.

He says it is important to "leave room for people to express their concerns", but at the same time this is a country of the rule of law and court rulings must be respected.

The RCMP's enforcement of the injunction has been met with condemnation from Indigenous leaders like Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, but in a statement, the Mounties argue they're an impartial player in this conflict.

"Where's our human rights?"

Pamela Palmater, chair in indigenous governance at Ryerson University, said the case points to the limits of rhetoric about reconciliation. They say such projects will jeopardize the area's natural resources and restrict access to their territory.

Perry Bellegarde, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, tweeted: "Everyone has the right to peaceful assembly and protest".

"There are very real communities being affected by this - terrorized by this".

"Our message is clear: Indigenous law is the law of the land on unceded territories, and traditional title-holders have the right to refuse access to their lands".

On Tuesday, the prime minister's address was subsequently moved to another government building close to Parliament Hill. Some held banners with skulls drawn on them and the words "no pipelines".

Chants of "Build that Pipe" drowned out the blockade supporters initially but the anti-pipeline group found its voice and were soon matching the volume with their own chant of "Consent".

The rally will include a round dance and remarks from Indigenous elders and activists.

Meanwhile, a different kind of protest was held in Regina, where oil and gas industry workers who are facing the prospect of layoffs want to see more pipelines proceed.

"I think a lot of our people are very hurt and very traumatized from it, so we're going to have a new layer of inter-generational trauma from watching the police hurt our people", said Robinson, speaking to media as two individuals holding a pro-pipeline banner stood behind her.

Other events are being planned for as far away as NY, and even Italy, according to social media. Canada Action aruges that the Coastal GasLink pipeline will help to reduce carbon emissions by allowing developing Asian countries to transition power production from coal to cleaner natural gas.

Ahead of the demonstrations in Canada and the United States, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Monday arrived at a checkpoint erected by the Indigenous land defenders created to prevent TransCanada from constructing its Coastal GasLink pipeline through what the protesters have described as "some of the most handsome and pristine territory in the world".
