Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen to testify in front of Congress

  • Ex-Trump lawyer Michael Cohen will testify publicly before Congress ahead of entering prison

President Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen will testify before the House Oversight Committee, the first major move by House Democrats to haul in a member of Trump's team connected to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, according to a schedule published by the committee.

Cohen responded to that by saying that he had been weak, but not because he reached a plea deal.

"COHEN asked Individual 1 about the possibility of Individual 1 traveling to Russian Federation in connection with the Moscow Project, and asked a senior campaign official about potential business travel to Russian Federation", the documents said. Prosecutors have said Cohen did so at Trump's direction.

Cohen has pleaded guilty in both investigations and was sentenced last month to three years in prison.

On Thursday, CNN's Jake Tapper warned that a day of "reckoning" is coming to President Donald Trump.

Cohen said he will "give a full and credible account of the events that have transpired".

Trump has dismissed Cohen as a liar who "became a 'Rat"' after the Federal Bureau of Investigation searched his office.

Cohen said a misplaced sense of loyalty led him to break the law for Trump.

Cohen said he secretly used shell companies to make payments of $150,000 United States and $130,000, respectively, to silence former Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult film actress Stormy Daniels for the goal of influencing the 2016 election. He told reporters on Thursday that "there will be limitations" on the topics covered in Cohen's testimony. He said, "To that end, we are in the process of consulting with Special Counsel Mueller's office".

"This makes clear that Chairman Cummings and the Democrats will do whatever it takes to attack this President", Jordan said in a statement.

Those payments were at the center of Cohen's plea to federal campaign finance charges past year.

In the interview, Cummings compared Cohen's appearance to that of John Dean, President Richard Nixon's White House counsel, who in 1973 appeared before a special Senate committee investigating the Watergate scandal in which he implicated himself, top administration officials and the president himself in a cover-up of the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

In a December interview, Cummings, D-Md., said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he wanted Cohen to appear before Congress as soon as this month and signaled that he viewed it as a matter of extreme outcome.

The current chairman of the House Oversight Committee is Rep. Elijah Cumming (D-Md.).

Schiff wants to restart parts of that probe. Cummings has asked for that information to be returned by January 22. He spoke to that panel in 2017. He added, "As a lawyer, Mr. Cohen should have known better".

"Last November, the American people voted overwhelmingly for Congress to do two things - address the core issues that affect their daily lives, and fulfill our Constitutional responsibility to serve as an independent check and balance on the executive branch by restoring accountability and transparency", Mr Cummings said in a statement.
