Democrats demand TV rebuttal time to Trump's Tuesday address

  • U.S. President Donald Trump

The California congresswoman added: "And the fact is: President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis, and must reopen the government".

TRUMP: "Over the years thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country and thousands more lives will be lost if we don't act right now". Every week 300 of our citizens are killed by heroine alone.

Schumer said Trump "just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration".

All the major TV networks, and some cable ones, have now made a decision to televise a Tuesday address by Donald Trump concerning border security and "the wall". Due to Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's refusal to put the bill up to a vote during the new 116th Congress, the bill hasn't passed the Senate for a second time, dragging the shutdown to its current standstill.

In his address, he also claimed that "the federal government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only-because Democrats will not fund border security". "The cost of illegal drugs exceeds $500 billion a year, vastly more than the $5.7 billion we have requested from Congress". Disputes over wall funding are at the heart of an ongoing partial shutdown of the USA federal government.

Earlier on Sunday, Trump had offered to erect a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall along the border to iron out differences with Democrats over the issue which has resulted in a partial government shutdown for over a fortnight.

Though both Democrats and Republicans agree there are problems at the border, critics have accused Mr Trump of greatly exaggerating the problem.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has stated that House Democrats are planning to pass a number of individual appropriation bills in the upcoming week to enable the opening of certain government agencies, such as the IRS and the Treasury Department, without resolving Trump's core demand that led to the shutdown. But Trump rejects that legislation because it doesn't have funding for his border wall.

Amid his talk of crisis, Mr Trump is considering declaring the border situation a national emergency, which could get him out of an impasse by enabling him to bypass Congress' mandate to approve federal spending and to build the wall without its approval. New York City, for example, has the nation's largest population of immigrants living in the country illegally - about 500,000 - and previous year had only 289 murders among a total population of 8.5 million people, according to preliminary data.

Smith also informed his information-challenged audience that that new trade deal with Mexico that's supposed to pay for all this isn't actually a thing yet: "As for the trade deal he mentioned with Mexico, which he said would pay for the wall, that trade deal is not yet complete".

While there has been an increase in children and families crossing the border seeking asylum in recent months, the rate of apprehensions of undocumented immigrants at the U.S. -Mexico border is actually much lower than it has been in recent history, as Vox's Dara Lind explained.

The debate is much sharper over whether a national security crisis exists at the border. He ordered United States troops to take up stations on the border. Newly empowered Democrats, meanwhile, have been urged by their base to fight Mr Trump's signature campaign pledge.
