The family made an emergency call but they were hit by an avalanche as they waited for rescuers to arrive, a police statement said.

Max Meyer was part of the mock trials team at the International Grammar School in Sydney.

The father, the mother, an Australian by birth, was of German, .

Media reports out of Austria say the family were skiing together when they became stuck in hard terrain, and called for help.

Parents and students at the school received an email on Thursday evening informing them that Max Meyer died on a European holiday with his family.

The mother was able to free herself from the snow but her son was buried at a depth of about 2 metres.

The school has reopened today and will be open next week for any students in need of counselling or support.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it "stands ready to provide consular assistance to the family of the victim in accordance with the Consular Services Charter".

Germany has deployed troops to rescue locals trapped in their homes following heavy snowfall in the town of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps, not far from the Austrian border, German media reported.

The avalanche happened while they were waiting for rescuers.

The heavy weather has caused at least nine deaths in Austria.

Several skiers have been killed in harsh weather across Europe this week.

Several railway lines in the Alps were closed because of the snow, trucks and cars got stuck for hours on a highway in south-western Germany and schools were closed in parts of Bavaria.

However, according to the publication, Elisabeth Koestinger, the Austrian minister responsible for tourism, said that "in most skiing areas, there is no reason for concern at present if people keep to the rules and don't leave the secured slopes".
