  • Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

Attorney John Michaels said in a statement the family of the patient, who has been confirmed as 29 years of age, are "outraged, traumatised and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare".

An attorney representing the woman's family told KPNX in a statement Tuesday that the family was not emotionally prepared to make a statement but that they "would like me to convey that the baby boy has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for".

Hacienda HealthCare has promised to work with authorities and welcomed planned DNA tests of employees.

Police said they immediately began a sexual assault investigation.

San Carlos Apache officials said the woman was an enrolled member of the tribe, whose reservation is 134 miles east of Phoenix.

Tribe chairman Terry Rambler spoke on behalf of the tribe in saying he was "deeply shocked and horrified".

"It is a large number of individuals", Sgt. Thompson said.

"Unless you are very overweight, most women will show visible signs of pregnancy by the third trimester, so it is surprising to me that her caregivers did not realize her state", Landry said.

"She could have been in active labor for a prolonged period of time, which could have resulted in adverse outcomes for mom and/or baby - for example, this could have resulted in infection, trauma or even death to the baby", Landry said.

The mother, who has been in a vegetative state for 14 years after a near-drowning, was "unable to move [and] unable to communicate, in other words, she was helpless and incapacitated", according to Thompson.

He would not confirm who the department is looking to get DNA from, but said authorities have obtained samples and were working to test them.

The search warrant to obtain DNA samples from the Hacienda HealthCare-owned facility was served on Tuesday, according to company spokesman David Leibowitz, the Associated Pressreported.

AZ Family reported a source at Hacienda HeathCare said "none of the staff were aware she was pregnant until she way pretty much giving birth". "Sadly, one of her caretakers was not to be trusted and took advantage of her".

Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department said officers responded on December 29 to a call of an infant who had been delivered at a long-term care facility in the area of 16th Street and South Mountain Avenue.

"In a statement, board member Gary Orman said: "[We] will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

Gov. Doug Ducey's office has called the situation "deeply troubling".

Founded as Hacienda de Los Angeles in 1967, Hacienda HealthCare describes itself on its website as "the leading provider of specialized medical care and social services for Arizona's infants, children and young adults who are medically fragile or chronically ill, including those with developmental disabilities".

"I can't believe someone receiving that level of constant care wasn't recognized as being pregnant prior to the time she delivered", Meyers said.
