Apple Addresses iPad Pro 'Bend' Drama With Support Page Outlining Manufacturing Process

Apple has instructions on its support page for consumers who think their iPad Pro doesn't meet the specifications outlined, but as long as the bend is below "400 microns of deviation", it doesn't seem to count as a problem. "For the first time ever on an iPad, these bands are manufactured using a process called co-molding", Apple says. Apple says the new iPad Pro's straight design means "subtle deviations"-or bending in "humankind" speak-are "more visible only from certain viewing angles that are imperceptible during normal use".

According to the page, the new iPad design and antenna lines may make "subtle deviations in flatness" more perceptible to the naked eye.

Apple continues to double down on its position that there is nothing abnormal about its all-new iPad Pro models shipping with some level of curvature out of the box. "After the plastic cools, the entire enclosure is finished with a precision CNC machining operation, yielding a seamless integration of plastic and aluminum into a single, strong enclosure". Cupertino stressed that these slight bends are imperceptible during normal use and they don't affect the enclosure's strength or the tablet's performance. Although this may explain a minor bend on some of its iPad Pro tablets, it doesn't help to explain the overall weak and easily bent structure of the device itself.

As Gizmodo previously reported, this issue was particularly irksome in context of the fact that the iPad Pro's new enclosure was touted as revolutionary for its thinness.

Apple's SVP of hardware engineering Dan Riccio had emailed some customers in December explaining the specification of 400 microns, described as less than half a millimeter thick.

If my inbox is anything to go by, there's one question about the new iPhone 6s that Apple hasn't answered satisfactorily - does it bend?

Readers respond to Apple's five reasons why an iPad Pro can be your next computer. No matter how many times Apple says its iPad is "strong, light, and durable", if it is bent, even if slightly, then it is bent.

Last September I wondered if an iPad - with iOS 11 and the Files app - might replace my MacBook.

Despite this, several of the bent iPad Pro pictures that users shared show noticeable warps that appear to be greater than 400 microns. The company completely ignores evidence to the contrary, however, such as the video by JerryRigEverything that showed a 2018 iPad Pro bending like a paperback book with minimal pressure.
