The GPU landscape is more nebulous, though the introduction of Radeon VII is a left-field move that could cause a problem for the high-end RTX GPUs: we have only another month to find out for ourselves.

The Radeon VII, the world's first consumer 7nm graphics card, promises to deliver twice the memory, more than twice the memory bandwidth and up to 29 percent higher gaming performance than the Radeon RX Vega 64 GPU. AMD gave a public preview live on stage at CES together with James Prior running a Radeon VII graphics card and an 8-core Ryzen 3000 series processor. The GPU features 60 compute units and AMD claims that it offers a 25 percent uplift in performance compared to the Radeon Vega 64 at the same power level. Our latest game benchmark results suggest that the Radeon VII will come in slightly below the Nvidia RTX 2080, as on average that offers a little over 30 percent more performance than the Vega 64. The Vega 10 is built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm process; the Vega 20 is built on TSMC's 7nm process.

The Radeon VII will go on sale for $699 on February 7. While that may not sound all that impressive on the face of it, high-refresh gaming requires strong single-threaded performance, and keeping the resolution relatively low helps emphasize the CPU over the GPU.

At launch, the Radeon Vega VII and systems that use it will qualify for AMD's "Raise the Game" game bundle, which includes free copies of Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5, and The Division 2.

If it can match the performance of the RTX 2080, however, Nvidia has already established that you can charge up to $800 for such a card.

Equipped with 60 compute units/3840 stream processors running at up to 1.8GHz and 16GB of ultra-fast HBM2 memory (second-generation High-Bandwidth Memory), the Radeon VII graphics card enables high-performance gaming and ultra-high quality visuals.

On the laptop front, AMD said on stage that it was focusing its efforts on students enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields. This new GPU is of course directed at content creators and gamers.
