  • Amazon's next big thing could be game streaming

Amazon is now planning a large-scale push into the video games industry, with the company working on a mysterious streaming service likely to be organized as the Netflix for interactive entertainment, The Information reports, citing people with knowledge of the initiative. Details are scant at the moment, but it's fair to assume the online retailer wants to create a Netflix-style on-demand platform for playing video games. The game-streaming service will reportedly allow players to stream games instead of buying original titles.

Through its Twitch subsidiary, the rapidly growing live video streaming service that focuses on video games, Amazon also oversees a thriving community of passionate gamers, some of whom are enjoying mainstream success and elevated cultural cache.

Regarding Google, last fall the company announced a preview of a game streaming service called Project Stream which runs on PCs and Chromebooks.

Of course, Amazon hasn't confirmed that it's working on such a service, so the pair of folks running their mouths might be barking up the wrong tree. That could all be changing soon and according to a new report from the Information, Amazon hopes to ride the cloud-gaming wave alongside its close competitors at Google and Microsoft.

That goes back to an article in the magazine The Information, which claims to have spoken to sources that seem to know about Amazon's plans. But while Sony was ahead of the curve, the service rarely offers new games and has often been noted to have performance issues. Its Fire TV streaming device, in fact, has a number of games. Amazon Prime members could also get a discount for the service.

The reported move into streaming is yet one more addition to the Amazon portfolio. A streaming service would obviate the need for storage space, since everything is rendered remotely; all you'd need is a strong broadband connection and a modest amount of cache space.
