  • Jeff Bezos world's richest person and wife divorce after 25 years

"After a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have made a decision to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends", the couple said.

The Bezoses said they felt "incredibly lucky" for their 25 years together and would remain involved with each other as close friends and parents.

Even adding that, if they had known they would separate after 25 years of marriage, they would still do "it all again".

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos said in the statement that they hope to remain friends and "partners in ventures". MacKenzie, a Princeton graduate who is now a novelist, did accounting for Amazon for its first year after it was founded in 1994. By law, without a prenup, couples are bestowed a 50-50 split of the purse, barring some exceptions which can be argued in court.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of United States online retail empire Amazon and the world's richest man, has taken to Twitter to publicly announce his impending divorce.

MacKenzie is an author of multiple novels, including Traps and The Testing of Luther Albright.

The couple met when they worked at hedge fund D.E. Shaw, and married in 1993. TMZ is reporting that Jeff Bezos has zero regrets about the way things unfolded 25 years ago when he and MacKenzie exchanged wedding vows.

MacKenzie Bezos has also been involved in their shared philanthropic initiatives, including scholarships for immigrant children and the new $2 billion Day One Fund. "How could you not fall in love with that laugh?" she told Vogue in 2013 when her novel, "Traps", was published.

Even if Bezos' net worth is cut in half following the divorce, he'll still be one of the world's richest people.

Bezos has credited MacKenzie, 48, for her support when he uprooted the young couple from NY to Seattle so he could launch the online bookseller that grew into one of the world's largest retailers.

Under Bezos, Amazon launched the Kindle and changed the way books are distributed and read.
