  • MLB Trade Rumors Mariners In Serious Talks With Phillies On Jean Segura TradeMore

The Phillies have acquired infielder Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio and left-handed pitcher James Pazos from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for infielders J.P. Crawford and Carlos Santana, the club announced tonight.

Players like Manny Machado and Bryce Harper have been linked to the Phillies over the last couple of months since they were one of the teams in the best position to be able to afford these kind of big-name players. He posted a career-high.304 batting average with a career-low strikeout mark to go with 178 hits, 10 homers and 63 RBIs.

With the Braves (signing Josh Donaldson), Mets (Robinson Cano trade) and Nationals (Yan Gomes trade) already making a splash, each bringing an All-Star into the NL East, the Phillies made their move less than a week before the 2018 MLB Winter Meetings commence in Las Vegas. One, the other or even both, could still be in red pinstripes soon, although it was a different star whose destination was Philadelphia on Monday. While Segura is only 28, he's been traded three times, having previously played for the Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, and Arizona Diamondbacks before going to the Mariners. Defensively, Segura has appeared in 763 career games at shortstop and 142 games at second base.

The Mariners would likely receive J.P. Crawford in return.

Speaking of Crawford, the former first-round pick never materialized into an All-star caliber player that everybody expected to become due to injuries. The Long Beach native was selected by the Phillies 16th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft and has 72 games of experience in the Majors.

Carlos Santana was supposed to be an offseason win for Phillies general manager Matt Klentak.

J.P. Crawford, the 13th pick in the 2013 Major League Baseball draft, played 49 games for the Phillies previous year. The deal has a $17 million option for 2023, with a $1 million buyout. He could be a quality lead-off man if that's the path the Phillies choose.
