Two military aircraft crashed early Thursday while refueling in the air during a training mission off the coast of Japan, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) said Wednesday. Two aviators were on the F/A-18 Hornet, while five Marines were on the KC-130.
Search and rescue operations were underway following a "mishap". Very few details have been made public in the initial Corps news release.
USA media reported five crew were on the C-130 and two on the F-18.
The Marine Corps said Japanese search-and-rescue aircraft immediately responded to aid in recovery efforts. The statement added that the incident was under investigation.
A spokesman for Japan's Self-Defense Forces said that one of the airmen had been rescued but the immediate fate of the remaining crew members was unclear.
The incident, which involved an F/A-18 and a KC-130 that took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, happened about 2 a.m. during "regularly scheduled training", a Marine Corps statement said.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
