Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has revealed that he hopes a "possible" deal to sell the club will be completed within the coming weeks, ideally so that a new owner will have control of the Magpies in time for the imminent January transfer window.

The Sports Direct tycoon says he is in more advanced talks than ever to sell the club.

"I'd like it to be before the January transfer window", he told Sky News' Ian King show.

Prior to that, Ashley and businesswoman Amanda Staveley's PDC Capital Partners had failed to reach an agreement for a sale in January.

The NUFC owner stating that talks with the potential buyer are way beyond any previous talks with anybody wanting to buy the club and that it is "possible" a deal could be done and dusted in December - but "realistic" for it to happen this month might be "too strong a word" to use.

The businessman's update on the sale process are likely to be welcomed by many fans, though there may also be raised eyebrows over his talk of recent good form.


Ashley, who did not name the interested party, added: "Hopefully we can carry on the good form - just recent good form - and we can get the deal done".

But earlier today, American outlet AJC revealed the billionaire was NOT the man ready to end Ashley's 11-year reign as owner of Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez's team lost 3-0 to West Ham on Saturday, but before that had won three league matches in a row and were unbeaten in their last four.

They are now 15th in the table with 12 points from their opening 14 fixtures, and face Wolves at St James' on Sunday with protestors calling for a boycott of the televised match.

Newcastle take on Everton in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

He added that any potential buyer must be able to provide transfer funds.
