Satellite images show expansion, activity at two North Korean missile bases

The group at Middlebury Institute of International Studies said based on its unique location, Yeongjeo-dong has always been a strong candidate to receive North Korea's newest long-range missiles.

Recent satellite images obtained by CNN indicate Pyongyang has continued to maintain and update its Yeongjeo-ri missile base, in breach of its vow for complete denuclearisation.

CNN said while the missile base has always been known to U.S. intelligence agencies and analysts, the satellite images show construction on a new facility just miles away from the older site that had not been previously publicly identified.

"North Korea appears to have begun to expand the base significantly, starting with the construction of a new headquarters area in 2014", the report stated.

"[North Korea] has not yet surrendered a single nuclear weapon, and the number of nuclear weapons is the key measure of the level of North Korean nuclear threat ..."

North Korea is now seeking security guarantees from the United States and relief from worldwide sanctions.

"Whatever Kim says about his desire for denuclearization, North Korea continues to produce and deploy nuclear armed missiles", he told CNN.

The State Department declined to comment, saying it doesn't discuss intelligence matters.

Kim's visit December 18 would come three months after South Korean President Moon Jae-in traveled to Pyongyang for a state visit and a day after the anniversary of Kim's father's death in 2011, Jeong Se-hyun, South Korea's former unification minister, said in a radio interview, according to The Telegraph.

"That's why I think the president thinks that another summit is likely to be productive", Bolton said during the Wall Street Journal's CEO conference.

An official at Seoul's presidential Blue House who spoke to JTBC on the condition of anonymity said the South needs an answer by the weekend in order to make plans for a summit, if it is to happen before the end of the year.

"China may convey [US] messages to North Korea and encourage it to complete denuclearisation ... to show to the USA that it is still honest in denuclearising North Korea".

National Security Advisor John Bolton said Tuesday that Trump thinks the North Korean strongman hasn´t met the commitments he made at the Singapore summit.

One such facility is the missile base near Yeongjeo-dong, a site that has long concerned USA and South Korean officials and the subject of the analysis of the new images released Wednesday.

Researchers were able to locate five entrances to underground tunnels they said may be used to store missiles. "These shelters are similar to the ones seen at the older portion of the Yeongjeo-dong base".
