While the North has repeatedly stressed these reciprocal measures should involve relief from worldwide sanctions, President Moon on Tuesday said he believed there were other ways for Washington to build trust.

Moon emphasised the impact Kim's presence in South Korea would have on the two nations.

Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to take concrete steps toward complete denuclearization if he wants sanctions lifted.

In this undated photo released Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, by the North Korean government, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, center, visits the Wonsan Shoes Factory in Gangwon, North Korea.

"The message is that President Trump has very favourable views towards Chairman Kim and he likes him", Mr Moon told reporters aboard a flight from Argentina to New Zealand, where he started a three-day state visit on Sunday.

"He hopes to fully carry out the remaining agreements [from their June summit in Singapore] together with him so that he will make Chairman Kim Jong Un get what he wants", Moon said.

He said such a visit would "accelerate the denuclearisation in the Korean peninsula" and result in a "greater stride in relations improvement" between the North and the United States.

Ardern met with Moon on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit and Apec last month, and he has visited New Zealand in 2006 and in 2015.

"This will be the first time that the North Korean leader will visit Seoul since Korea was divided into two countries", he said.

Trump said earlier in October that his meeting with Kim would be held after the midterm Congressional elections, and the venue of his second meeting with Kim had been narrowed down to "three or four" locations. In a speech to the leaders on the last day of the G20, President Moon shared his administration's ambitious goal of cutting the country's reliance on coal and nuclear power and increasing the proportion of electricity it gets from renewable sources, ... something he's promised to raise to 20 percent by the year 2030.

North Korea had been angered by Washington's refusal to ease sanctions and has warned it could resume development of its nuclear program if the United States did not drop its campaign.

Moon said he and Trump agreed during their meeting that Kim's trip to Seoul would play a "very positive role" in US-North Korea nuclear diplomacy.
