CSA astronaut David Saint Jacques, member of the main crew to the International Space Station (ISS), interacts with his children from a bus prior to the launch of Soyuz-FG rocket.

It was the first manned Russian rocket launch since a dramatic aborted Soyuz failure in October.

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft carrying three astronauts has successfully docked with the International Space Station following a launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan six hours earlier.

The accident in October was the first aborted crew launch for the Russian space program since 1983, when two Soviet cosmonauts safely jettisoned after a launch pad explosion.

The mission to the ISS - the 58th using a Soyuz - may be one of the last taken with the rocket that has served as the only way to get to the ISS since NASA retired the Space Shuttle in 2011.

Crew commander Mr Kononenko said: "Risk is part of our profession". "We are psychologically and technically prepared for blast-off and any situation which, God forbid, may occur onboard".

European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Sergei Prokopyev of Roscosmos were set to greet the trio on arrival at the ISS.

The Soyuz capsule carrying the astronaut reached the ISS six hours later.

Ms McClain, a former military pilot, said the crew "feel very ready" for their mission.

"The teamwork that you demonstrate today is exactly what we should replicate on Earth more often", she said.

Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, 48, agreed that the Soyuz spacecraft was "incredibly safe".

Russian Federation said last month the October launch had failed because of a sensor damaged during assembly at the Baikonur cosmodrome, but insisted the spacecraft remained reliable. The ISS went a crew of three.

This is the first spaceflight for both McClain and Saint-Jacques and the fourth trip to the space station for Kononenko. Plus, it's the first time a Canadian astronaut (Saint-Jacques) is headed to space since Chris Hadfield, who lead the International Space Station five years ago and was known for his publicity success. NASA's McClain was deployed to Iraq and represented the United States women's national rugby union team in the past.

The crew are safely in orbit and will be welcomed aboard at 2:36 p.m.

He recently joked Russian Federation would send a mission to the Moon to "verify" whether or not NASA lunar landings ever took place.

Next year, however, Russian Federation will see intense worldwide competition.
