  • Pakistan says US accepts its role in Afghan peace

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that past rulers not only enslaved themselves but the whole nation at the hands of some "super powers", ARY News reported.

Nevertheless, he did not discount the possibility that Afghan Taliban jihadis are freely moving across the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

On Trump's letter seeking support, the PM said: "Peace in Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest". He said peace in Afghanistan is in Pakistan's interest, so his government will do "everything" to help.

Dunford stressed that his top priority is not to ensure security and stability in Afghanistan, which has been lying in shambles as a result of the 17-year-long war, but to "make recommendations for the deployment of military force that protects the American people, the homeland and our allies".

They also said that Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is working on the Pakistani response.

He said Iranian Foreign Minister Jawwad Zarif also paid a visit to Islamabad and discussed the modalities for Yemen peace process.

Khan - who also reiterated his backing for a recent push by the U.S. for talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan - said in a televised address that he wants Pakistan to move forward with "honour". "If there are a few hundred, maybe 2,000 to 3,000 Taliban [jihadis] who move into Pakistan, they could easily move into these Afghan refugee camps", he declared. "If we had stayed neutral after 9/11, I reckon we would have saved ourselves from the devastation that took place afterward", he explained, adding that by becoming the "front-line state for the USA in the war on terror, this country went through hell".

"Pakistan's action or inaction, as it relates to stability in Afghanistan, has often led to US's frustration", he said, adding that stability in the South Asia region remains the most important mutual strategic interest for both the United States and Pakistan.

Talking about the relations with the United States, marred by distrust, he said "Who would not want to be friends with the USA?", while seeking improved relations with the world superpower.

The Taliban are fighting to flush out US-led worldwide forces and re-establish their regime in Afghanistan after their ouster in 2001. These people crossing would be seen. "Pakistan does not appear to be using the full extent of its influence to encourage the Taliban to come to the table", he said. "Already, we have investors coming into Pakistan", he said.

At his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, the incoming head of US Central Command Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie also said American forces must stay, lest the Afghan government succumb to the pressure of the Taliban - which is still going strong despite years of US involvement.

By becoming the front-line state for the U.S. in the war on terror, he regretted, Pakistan "went through hell". "It cared for the underprivileged, for the people who can't compete in the race".

Prime Minister Khan told the newspaper that he wants something to be done about the bombers of Mumbai. Then, in 1989, when the Soviets packed up and left, the U.S. did too. I had gone on television and warned everyone that we will stand by the Supreme Court verdict. He said he hopes that after the elections Pakistan can resume talks with India.
