Launches from Vandenberg, especially those carried out after sundown, typically create impressive aerial light shows over Southern California and the southwestern United States.

The United Launch Alliance announced Thursday that the Delta IV Heavy rocket will not be launching from the Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) in Santa Barbara County, California during its planned schedule. However, around 5:40 p.m., ULA reports the launch had been scrubbed and they will attempt it again Thursday night.

The Delta IV Heavy consists of three Delta IV rocket cores strapped together and topped with an upper stage.

Who knows? Maybe there'll be another sunset fireball to celebrate a successful Delta 4 Heavy launch - after what are now four postponements.

The NROL-17 launch had to be put off until December 30 at the earliest so that United Launch Alliance could address the Delta 4 Heavy rocket's accumulation of excess hydrogen.

"We have declared a scrub for today's launch of the #DeltaIVHeavy".

"The team is evaluating all the data, and we'll update about a launch date when we can", according to ULA. Attempts on Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 were scrubbed due to technical issues, and a Dec. 18 try was called off because of high winds.

ULA's 71st mission for the National Reconnaissance Office will see the company's most powerful rocket carry a spy satellite into orbit.

"We are proud to launch this critical payload in support of our nation's national security mission, " Wentz said.
