Google revealed yesterday that it will shut down Allo, a messaging service that it launched in September 2016 alongside Duo, a video messaging service.

The other report I referenced at the start of this involved Allo, Google's never-popular-because-it-had-major-flaws messaging app.

The team behind development on Allo was reportedly moved to focus on the Chat platform, headed up by Anil Sabharwal, now Vice President, Chrome, Comms and Photos + Australia Site Lead, at the time of the announcement.

Allo will continue to work through March 2019 and until then, youll be able to export all of your existing conversation history from the app—We've learned a lot from Allo, particularly whats possible when you incorporate machine learning features, like the Google Assistant, into messaging.
The former will take care of messaging; the latter will cover video conferencing scenarios. As Google has found out, consumers aren't that interested. It'll keep its Duo video calling service around for the foreseeable future, though. Google also at one point left some people wondering if Allo would be the intended successor to Google Hangouts' consumer usage, though of course that is being sunset, too. The app is seeing "strong growth and engagement" according to Google.

With Android Messages Chat, you're no longer limited to 160 characters.

Google's big bet this time is on Messages, a chat experience based on RCS that the company builds into the Android device to position it as a direct competitor to Apple's iMessage. Some users, including myself, did not really want to invest into another Google communication application that would meet the face of its predecessors eventually, probably.

Ever since its final update, several Allo users have complained of bugs and broken functionality. However, the sense here is that Google is carefully using the words that is letting it deny the coming demise of Hangouts, but Hangouts users will definitely find the app changed significantly by the end of the year.
