Ecuador: UK gave enough guarantees for Assange to leave embassy

  • UK guarantees are enough for Julian Assange to leave embassy, Ecuador’s president says

"The British government sent us an official communication indicating that the constitution of Great Britain bars extradition of a person to a place where his life would be in danger", Moreno said.

The British Foreign Office referred a CNN question about such possible guarantees to the Home Office, but the latter said it will not release a statement on the issue Thursday.

Mr Assange fled to the embassy to avoid charges of rape, sexual molestation and coercion.

He did not say he would force Assange out of his country's embassy but said Assange's legal team is considering its next steps.

There is speculation that the United States interest in Assange is connected to the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 election that brought President Donald Trump to office.

But Mr Assange insists British authorities will hand him over to the US. WikiLeaks has been accused of leaking thousands of emails allegedly stolen by Russian hackers from the Democratic campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Last month, an inadvertent court filing in a case unrelated to Assange revealed that he has been charged in secret.

WikiLeaks has released thousands of classified United States military documents, among other disclosures, including thousands of emails that were hacked from Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Then-U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April 2017 that arresting Assange was a "priority".

"More than five years in asylum is not human", Moreno said in an interview with Carmen Aristegui for CNN en Español. The investigation in Sweden was later dropped, and Ecuador said there were no pending extradition requests against Assange.

Moreno underlined that Assange should not be scared that he could be transferred to a country where he could face the death penalty.

In November a filing error revealed that Mr Assange faced charges in the United States - although it was not clear what those charges were. "He will spend a few months in jail, and after that, it's freedom", he said.

Assange has remained in Ecuador's embassy in London for fear that he will be extradited to countries where he is wanted or that he will be arrested in the United Kingdom for the criminal offence of breaching his bail conditions.
