  • Man Dies After Coughing Up Lung's Bronchial Tree

But it's not anything fantastically fictional - it's a real blood clot that came out of the body of human being and is the exact shape of a lung passage.

But it wasn't a piece of coral, or even something doctors had removed themselves - it was an intact, perfectly formed blood clot cast that a patient had spat up after "an extreme bout of coughing". His medical history included heart failure with an ejection fraction of 20%, bioprosthetic aortic-valve replacement for bicuspid aortic stenosis, endovascular stenting of an aortic aneurysm, and placement of a permanent pacemaker for complete heart block.

Despite the best efforts of intensive care staff at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, the man died a week later.

A man in California actually coughed up parts of his lungs after he was admitted to the ICU with chronic heart failure.

His condition was so severe that doctors put him on a machine called a ventricular assist device, which helps the heart pump blood.

Doctors were surprised by the blood clot cast.

"We were astonished", pulmonary surgeon Georg Wieselthaler told The Atlantic of the clot.

According to a case report from the New England Journal of Medicine published on November 29, during a particularly violent coughing spell, the man coughed up his right bronchial tree - all intact.

Sadly, a week after the man coughed up the clot, he died due to complications from heart failure despite being fitted out with the ventricular assistance device.

"It's a curiosity you can't imagine".

A 2005 report in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery refers to a similar case where a pregnant woman coughed up a less-extensive blood clot cast also in the shape of her bronchial tree.
