Canadian authorities have arrested the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies in Vancouver, B.C.
At this time, the department spokesperson can't share more details because Meng requested a publication ban.
Huawei confirmed the arrest in a statement and said that it has been provided little information of the charges against Meng, adding that it was "not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng".
U.S. authorities have been probing Huawei since at least 2016 for allegedly shipping US-origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of USA export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April.
Meng is also deputy chairman of the board and the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei.
A spokesman for the US Justice Department in the Eastern District of NY - which Huawei said had brought the charges - declined to comment. "The ban was being sought by Ms. Meng".
Canada has arrested a senior staff member on Huawei's global executive team on suspicion she violated USA sanctions against Iran. Meng adopted her mother's surname.
Huawei's relationship with the USA just took a turn for the worse.
"Huawei complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the United Nations, U.S. and European Union".
Earlier this year, two US senators wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warning him that doing business with the Chinese telecom giant would open Canada up to a huge security risk.
One of Huawei's top executives was arrested in Canada today, but the move was reportedly made at the request of the United States government.
The US later replaced the ban with a fine and governance changes.
New Zealand and Australia have stopped telecom operators from using Huawei's equipment in new 5G networks because they are concerned about possible Chinese government involvement in their communications infrastructure.
The report said existing Huawei equipment at the firm's current 3G and 4G networks would also be removed.
Skycom was described by Huawei as one of its "major local partners", although the Chinese company said neither it nor Skycom ultimately provided the HP equipment.
