Makhura said he was "disturbed by criminality" after the festival at FNB Stadium in Soweto.

While the Global Citizen Festival went off largely without a hitch yesterday, there have been several reports of muggings after it ended.

Global Citizen and another group backing the concert, the House of Mandela, urged South African police "to act swiftly and efficiently".

The concert, which is part of a campaign on the Global Goals to end extreme poverty, features global music icons like Beyonce, JAY-Z, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Pharrell Williams, Usher and Chris Martin. Criminals have become too emboldened.

The City of Johannesburg's member of mayoral committee for public safety, Michael Sun, said he was shocked to hear about the incidents and stressed that the City was talking to police to establish what happened because they were responsible for overall policing at the festival.

He said the City would assist with the police investigations.

"The criminals were basically having a field day", said Zikhona Tshona, a reporter for the South African news organization eNCA.

Another witness, Shantie Khosa, also lamented the lack of visible policing and security after the concert.

"There was one robbery that took place at Sasol garage which was reported to us and we arrested the suspect with regards to that".

"Because of this event being of national importance, it was taken over by National Joints Operations of SAPS".

The stadium was filled by thousands attending the concert.

"For the Global Citizen Festival, the stadium provided the venue, we provided logistical services and provided certain cleaning, as well as medical services".
