With a little over a month away until she takes office, the newly-elected New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has announced she will be paying her interns $15 per hour in an effort to "walk the walk".

Referring to an article The Nation last week, Ocasio-Cortez said that an alleged $21 trillion worth of improper financial transactions at the Pentagon would be enough to pay for two-thirds of the $32 trillion bill for Medicare for All - with the latter number derived from an analysis of Bernie Sanders' health care plan by Charles Blahous of the libertarian Mercatus Center back in August.

"Time to walk the walk", Ocasio-Cortez. "Congress of ALL places should raise [Members" Representational Allowances] so we can pay staff an actual DC living wage", she wrote.

A study out previous year, according to the HuffPost says that only 51 per cent of Republican senators offer paid internships and just 31 per cent of Democrats do.

House interns fare worse: Only 8 percent of those who work for Republicans and 3.6 percent who work for Democrats get paid. It found that in the Senate, 51% of Republicans and 31% of Democrats pay their interns.

A recent list of top lawmakers who offer young staffers zero pay includes such progressive heroes like California Sen. "Kamala Harris, Virginia Democrat Mark Warner, and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer - all of whom have voiced support for raising the federal minimum wage", the outlet reported. Hours later, Schumer's office announced that the job posting had been made "in error" and said that Schumer's interns will be paid a stipend in the new Congress. The same can be said for Vermont Sen.

And her chief of staff told The Washington Post that they intend to pay the interns "at least" $15 an hour. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) as well as Sen.

"The Democratic Socialist's spokesperson confirmed to Vice News that she will seek a seat on the House Ways and Means committee, which is traditionally packed with seasoned legislators with experience in writing tax code", writes Fox News. Ted Cruz told Fox Business that he is paying his interns, though the individual would not say "how much or whether all interns are included".
