The provincial capital of Ancona is the nearest big town.

Six people were killed and around 35 injured in a stampede at a night club in Italy's Corinaldo near the coastal city of Ancona on Saturday, reported AFP. Numerous injured suffered severe bruising while others had broken bones. It wasn't immediately clear how many people were inside when the stampede erupted or the club's maximum capacity.

A further 14 people are said to be seriously injured, with as many as 100 people injured in total.

The ages of the victims weren't immediately given. The disaster occurred at around 1 a.m. local time (0000 UTC).

Firefighters said there was panic when it is thought pepper spray may have been fired inside the club in the town of Corinaldo during a concert performance by the Italian rapper, Sfera Ebbasta.

Asked about survivors' accounts that at least one emergency exit door was blocked or didn't work, Poggiali said it was too early in the investigation to know if any safety violations might have played a role. "The bouncers told us to go back", he said.

A 16-year-old boy told ANSA news agency disco patrons were dancing while waiting for the concert to start when the stampede erupted.

Italian high schools are usually open on Saturdays, but schools were closed this weekend for the December 8 national holiday of the Immaculate Conception.
