  • Alexandria Ocasio Cortez votes in her district in the Bronx

Her victory in the USA midterm elections on Monday makes her the youngest woman ever to win election to Congress. Stefanik was previously the youngest person ever elected, as she was 30 when she won her first campaign in 2014.

In a year that has been defined by the political awakening and activism of women, the mid-term is testing whether those women will reach record-breaking numbers in Congress and in governor's mansions across the country.

Diversity also won the day Tuesday with a record number of women of color headed to the halls of Congress.

■In Texas, Democrats Veronica Escobar and Sylvia Garcia both won their House races, becoming the first Hispanic women from their state to serve in Congress. Escobar will serve the Sixteenth District, while Garcia will represent the Twenty-Ninth District.

Women hold 23 of the 100 U.S. Senate seats, and this year 23 women are on the ballot for the chamber. Tlaib also becomes the first Palestinian-American in Congress and Omar the first Somali-American.

The 2018 elections marked the first time voters went to the polls nationwide since Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

The first Native American women have also been elected to Congress, with Democrats Deb Haaland winning in New Mexico and Sharice Davids in Kansas.

A lawyer and former MMA fighter, Davids became the first Native American congresswoman and the first lesbian congresswoman from Kansas.

Rising left-wing rock star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made history on Tuesday, November 6, as the youngest woman elected to Congress, in a safe Democratic Party stronghold in New York, US media projected. They include veterans, a former Central Intelligence Agency operative, a teacher who grew up the daughter of a drug addict, a one-time bartender and dozens of first-time candidates.

Comparing how many of each party's women candidates won their seats, the Democratic women were more successful, particularly in the Senate and House races. Polis was also the first openly gay man elected to Congress in 2008.

Which party's women candidates were the most sucessful?

Mills, now the state's attorney general, has won the governorship, checking another state off a long list that has never had a female chief executive. An overwhelming majority of Americans, almost 8 in 10, said it's important to elect more women to public office. In Maine, Democrat Janet Mills will become the state's first woman governor, and in South Dakota, Republican Kristi Noem will be the first women to lead the state. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.
