United Kingdom junior transport minister quits over 'terrible mistake' of Brexit deal

  • Jo Johnson has resigned as transport minister over BrexitMore

Johnson, backed the Remain side during the referendum said it would be "a travesty" not to have a second referendum.

Jo Johnson, younger brother of former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, said the withdrawal agreement being discussed by European Union and British leaders would greatly weaken Britain and require the country to follow European Union rules without having any say.

The plan emerged after Jo Johnson, a transport minister, resigned from the Government over Brexit and vowed to vote against Mrs May's deal in the House of Commons.

Johnson suggested that other senior Conservatives might be considering their positions, saying that "many are reflecting hard about the deal that's looming and how they will respond to it".

Ahead of a conference of the Eurosceptic Bruges Group on Saturday, Tory MP Mark Francois said further ministerial resignations could not be ruled out.

Cabinet ministers have been visiting 10 Downing St this week to see details of the government's plan for the "divorce deal" and subsequent trading and customs relationship with the EU. "I've done so, if others feel that it's right for them to do so then good on them".

According to Bloomberg, citing people from camps, the European Union and the United Kingdom need to work more on the Brexit deal in the next week if a summit to conclude the breakthrough agreement is to be held later this month.

The former transport minister accused the Brexit campaign - which was led, in part, by his brother Boris - of offering the public "a false prospectus" that bears little resemblance to the reality of the deal that the prime minister is to present to parliament. There is no question that the Brexit deal that Theresa May is hoping to persuade her cabinet and parliament to back would be a bad outcome for Britain. Amid a Brexit process that has been characterised by shameful dissimulation at the highest levels of the British state, Mr Johnson should be applauded for his honesty.

"We have to get the best deal possible".

It is created to ease fears that leaving the union without a deal would mean ports would be shut, planes would be grounded and the British economy would face a shock.

Speaking of his brother, Jo Johnson acknowledged that the Brexit negotiations "have at least united us in fraternal dismay".

Labour said the resignation - the 18th during the PM's tenure - showed May had lost authority and could not negotiate Brexit.

Asked by German magazine Der Spiegel if he would stop Brexit if he could, the Labour leader said: "We can't stop it. What we can do is recognise the reasons why people voted Leave".
