The U.S. Democratic Party on Tuesday has secured the House majority from the Republicans in the midterm elections, according to projections of multiple news outlets. It remains to be seen whether two years of only modest reforms will depress enthusiasm for Trump's re-election, or motivate 2020 voters to deliver him a majority he can work with in a second term.

The Democrats flipped some Republican-held House seats Tuesday in Florida and Virginia but fell short in a closely watched race in Kentucky as they worked to wrest control of the chamber from the Republican Party and confront President Trump.

But Fox News' Decision Desk projection that Democrats will now control of the House gives hope to liberals who want to continue the Russian Federation investigation, and even introduce articles of impeachment against the president. "Dealing a major setback to President Trump's legislative agenda".

Early exit polls showed Trump was a major factor for almost two-thirds of voters who cast their ballots, while a CBS News poll found that 55 percent said they disapproved of the president's performance.

"Lavrov also reiterated Moscow's position that it is not meddling in USA elections".

At 11:15 pm, when Republicans had cemented their majority in the Senate but Democrats were on their way to taking power in the House, Trump tweeted that the election had been a "tremendous success".

"But when we can't find that common ground, we will stand our ground".

Despite his party losing the House, Trump wrote on Twitter,"Tremendous success tonight".

Missouri is extremely close for the President, where 51% approve and 48% disapprove and Republican Josh Hawley holds a commanding lead over incumbent Sen.

Most Democratic candidates in tight races stayed away from harsh criticism of Trump during the campaign's final stretch, focusing instead on bread-and-butter issues like keeping down healthcare costs, maintaining insurance protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions and safeguarding the Social Security retirement and Medicare healthcare programs for senior citizens.

"Should Republicans lose the House, Sanders says the president's agenda is not going to change".

All 435 seats in the US House were up for re-election, although fewer than 90 were considered competitive while Some 35 Senate seats were in play, as were nearly 40 governorships and the balance of power in virtually every state legislature.

But he will have to deal with a GOP-controlled Senate, as well as President Trump's potential veto pen.

Pelosi has campaigned tirelessly this election season.

But Andrew Gillum lost to Republican Ron DeSantis in his quest to become the first African-American governor of the key swing state of Florida.

Some Democrats have also indicated that should their party take the reins of Congress, they would begin impeachment proceedings against the president and attempt force him to reveal his tax returns. He traveled to Indiana, Florida, Montana, Nevada, Missouri and MS - and in some cases landed in dramatic fashion aboard Air Force One to crowds of supporters enthusiastically cheering his red-meat speeches focused mostly on immigration and warnings about what Democratic control meant for his agenda.

Democrats also captured governorships in Michigan, Illinois and Kansas.

Republicans banked on those dynamics being offset by a vibrant economy and by a president whose insult-laden approach to political discourse was as stirring for conservative voters as it was infuriating to liberals.

The Democratic gains were fuelled by women, young and Hispanic voters, a Reuters/Ipsos Election Day poll found. Fifty-five percent of women said they backed a Democrat for the House this year, compared to 49% in the 2014 midterm congressional election. But a crucial piece of math was in their favor: The Democrats and their two independent allies were defending 26 seats, Republicans just nine. Those bills passed the House only to die in the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to revise rules requiring 60 Senate votes for most bills, and pro-abortion Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski had the power to block simple-majority votes. Fundraising reports from the third quarter of 2018 cemented those fears as Democrats outraised Republican opponents in competitive House races.

Millions of Americans voted Tuesday, and results have been projected in several races in the USA midterms, the critical first nationwide election seen as a referendum on Donald Trump's presidency.
