NASA's Parker Solar Probe set two records on October 29 - one for becoming the closest a man-made object has gotten to the sun, and one for becoming the fastest-ever human-made object relative to the sun.

The Parker Solar Probe is now expected to continue its approach, passing through the corona, or the sun's outer atmosphere, next week, reaching within 15 million miles of its surface.

The Parker Solar Probe is now the closest spacecraft to the sun-it passed the current record of 26.55 million miles from the sun's surface at 1:04 p.m. on Monday, as calculated by the Parker Solar Probe team.

The device broke the record, Helios 2, which is close to the Sun on 42,73 million kilometers in 1976, reports the Country with reference to NASA.

The probe is expected to break its own record in 2024 by obtaining a speed of 430,000 miles per hour.

"It's been just 78 days since Parker Solar Probe launched, and we've now come closer to our star than any other spacecraft in history", Andy Driesman, Project Manager of the Parker Solar Probe mission, told NASA. It broke the record set by the Helios 2 probe in 1976. Its mission is to learn everything it can about the center of the solar system, the sun.

Parker Solar Probe will begin its first solar encounter on October 31, continuing to fly closer and closer to the Sun's surface until it reaches its first perihelion - the point closest to the Sun - at about 10:28 p.m. EST on November 5.

This unmanned spacecraft, built at the cost of 1.5 billion dollars, was launched in August. At about 10:54 p.m. EDT, #ParkerSolarProbe surpassed 153,454 miles per... NASA explains:The DSN sends a signal to the spacecraft, which then retransmits it back to the DSN, allowing the team to determine the spacecraft's speed and position based on the timing and characteristics of the signal.

As the probe makes it ever-closer shaves of the Sun, it will study our star in ways never before possible.

Scientists hope the probe will solve some of the sun's mysteries, such as why the corona is hotter than the surface of the sun itself. "The objective of the Parker probe is to study the effect of the sun on the surface of the Earth".
