  • A vehicle can be seen on fire in Bourke Street Melbourne

Ashton said the police initially responded to calls about a four-wheel-drive utility vehicle on fire in the busy Bourke Street Mall shopping district at about 4:10 p.m. local time. According to police reports, the man jumped out of his truck, which caught fire, and began attacking random bystanders with a knife.

It then showed a man approach two police officers with what appears to be a knife, and attempt to stab them.

Several people were stabbed in the Australian city of Melbourne on Friday (Nov 9) and a man was arrested after an incident in the centre of the city crowded with pedestrians and shoppers. He died in hospital.

"The guy was out of control so I just went into action mode and tried to swipe him with the trolley".

Commissioner Ashton said Khalif had a criminal history for cannabis use, theft and driving offences.

- The terrorist has been named as 30-year-old Somali-born Hassan Khalif Shire Ali.

He had his passport was cancelled in 2015 after he was flagged as one of 300 potential security risks.

(9News) There is a heavy police presence at both homes.

Shire Ali is understood to have previously been investigated for his association with others linked to terrorism.

"We are still trying to piece together whether the vehicle was lit, then he got out the auto or whether he got out of the auto and then the vehicle took flame", Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters.

The investigation is still in its early stages, but Ashton said police do not believe there is a "ongoing threat".

"I want to point out that what we saw yesterday was an act of terror", said Andrews, who also described the attack as "pure evil".

Speaking on the Today Show , he said Khalif's auto contained gas cylinders and it is believed he meant to cause an explosion.

Australia's News.comsaid the slain victim has not been formally identified. Some of those witnesses said he was stabbed in the face.

A 24-year-old man from Hampton Park and a 58-year-old Launceston man, said to be Tasmanian businessman Rod Patterson, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One listener said he could see a white sheet over a body.

Premier Daniel Andrews condemned the incident as "an evil and bad thing", thanking the police and citizens who responded and adding "as a city, will not be defined by this act of evil - we are bigger and stronger than this".

Victorian premier Daniel Andrews' office sent out a statement following his press conference.

The man who bravely took on a knife-wielding terrorist while armed with just a shopping trolley says he is no hero.

One of his victims sustained significant head injuries.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney told a media briefing on Saturday it was believed the attack was inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group, though it was thought Shire Ali had no direct links to the organisation.
