Study Links Older Cellphone Frequencies To Cancer In Male Rats

  • Cellphone Radiation Causes Cancer in Rats, Government Study Finds

A study commissioned by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has concluded that there is a link between high levels of radio frequency radiation (RFR) - like that used in 2G and 3G cellphones - and cancerous heart tumors in male rats, which were exposed to high-level RFR.

The experiment, by the National Toxicology Program, found positive but relatively modest evidence that radio waves from some types of cellphones could raise the risk that male rats develop brain cancer. However, researchers notes the evidence was less clear when it came to female rats. "Thus, the results of these studies remain relevant to current exposures, although the power levels of the exposures were much higher than typical patterns of human use".

"In our studies, rats and mice received radio frequency radiation across their whole bodies".

What's more, the rodents were exposed to cellphone radiation - known as radio-frequency radiation - at greater levels, and for much longer periods, than what people experience, the researchers said.

The study used extremely high levels throughout the entire body and inexplicably found that exposed rats lived longer than those who didn't experience any radiation, Shuren said.

The final reports are the conclusions of NTP and a panel of external scientific experts who reviewed the studies in March after draft reports were issued in February.

But the link between cell phones and cancer in male rats was undeniable.

However, those tempted to toss away today's most important tool of communications may want to consider that the study's researchers did specify the levels of radiation the rats were subjected to were not comparable to those humans are exposed to. The lowest level of radiation used was the maximum exposure allowed for cellphone users by federal regulations.

The 2G and 3G networks were standard when the studies were designed and are still used for phone calls and texting.

The report leaves open the possibility that the kind of radiation produced by cellphones might have the potential to cause cancer, but it does not answer the question of how that might happen.

Strangely, however, the studies found that exposure in male rats actually lengthened their lifespan, possibly linked with a decrease in chronic kidney problems found in older rats. The radiation began in the womb or early in life and lasted for up to two years, which is most of the animals' lifetime.

The radiation exposure was intermittent, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, totaling about nine hours each day. The RFR levels in the studies ranged from 1.5-6 watts per kilogram in rats, and 2.5-10 watts per kilogram in mice.

The toxicology agency is building smaller exposure chambers that will let it evaluate newer technologies in weeks or months, instead of years. In addition, the studies will try to identify biomarkers that may indicate early effects of radio-frequency radiation exposure in rodents, such as changes in heart rate or molecular changes that might be predictive of cancer.

"From what we now understand, it likely differs dramatically from what we studied".

"Based on our results, we are planning further studies to confirm that the experimental evidence continues to support this".
