'We need to show the American public that when we put an astronaut on a rocket, they'll be safe'.

The company is then planning a crewed flight in June 2019.

A NASA spokesman declined to comment on why it chose to launch the review, when approached by The Post, but said it will "ensure the companies are meeting NASA's requirements for workplace safety, including the adherence to a drug-free environment". "If I see something that's inappropriate", Bridenstine said, "the key concern to me is what is the culture that led to that inappropriateness and is NASA involved in that".

Also unchanged is the schedule of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner test flights. "We are confident that our comprehensive drug-free workforce and workplace programs exceed all applicable contractual requirements", a spokeswoman said.

NASA invested in SpaceX with a $1.6 billion dollar contract for cargo flights to the International Space Station - and NASA is counting on SpaceX - and another commercial provider, Boeing, to carry cargo and astronauts to its orbiting outpost. "Anything that would result in some questioning the culture of safety, we need to fix immediately".

The sources claim NASA will be evaluating the "culture" at these two companies, indicating that the officials may believe similar activities take place among the workers.

We are focused on safe and successful commercial crew missions to the International Space Station. "As NASA's trusted partner since the beginning of human spaceflight, we share the same values and are committed to continuing our legacy of trust, openness and mission success".

The company "ensures the integrity, safety and quality of our products, our people and their work environment".

Despite several setbacks and delays for both companies, Boeing and SpaceX hope to carry out manned human spaceflight, using the spacecraft that will launch for the ISS, in mid-2019. Between the two flights, Boeing will perform a pad abort test. "While we're all pushing hard to get flying, you also want to want to provide it safely", said Benji Reed, director of commercial crew mission management at SpaceX. "Current projected schedules for uncrewed and crewed test flights for both providers have considerable risk and do not appear achievable", said Patricia Sanders, chair of NASA's Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP), of the commercial crew program during an October 11 meeting of the committee.

Despite the recent incident, NASA has worked with Musk for years, with SpaceX having already flown 14 resupply missions to the ISS. The review will start early next year, and will take months to complete. The company's Crewed Flight Test, carrying NASA astronauts Eric Boe and Nicole Aunapu Mann along with Chris Ferguson, a Boeing test pilot and former NASA astronaut, is scheduled for August.
