  • Indonesian President Joko Widodo talking to Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al Jubeir in Bogor Oct 22 2018

Tursilawati's controversial death comes in the wake of the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an outspoken and high profile critic of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Commission IX will call for the details on the last attempts made by the government against Indonesian citizens who happen to have problems overseas.

"We have called Saudi Arabia's foreign minister and conveyed our protest", said Widodo, according to his cabinet secretary's office.

Tuti was sentenced to death in 2011 for beating her employer to death with a stick in self-defence against attempted rape.

The death penalty was carried out despite the Indonesian Government's efforts to provide "maximum legal assistance" by appealing against Ms Tursilawati's death sentence both in court and in a letter to the Saudi Arabian King, Ms Marsudi said.

It's the third time in three years that the kingdom has executed an Indonesian citizen without informing their government in advance.

Susilo also condemned the e‌xe‌cution and urged the president of Indonesia to take "serious" diplomatic steps to prevent any other uninformed exe‌c‌ut‌io‌ns of Indonesians in Saudi Arabia in the future, Daily Mail reported.

The Saudi embassy has not responded to Jakarta calls.

Ms Marsudi told a press conference at the Our Ocean conference in Bali on Tuesday she had lodged an official complaint about Ms Tursilawati's execution with Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Indonesia Osama al-Shuaibi.

He said the Saudi move to secretly execute Tuti Tursilawati is an attempt to cover up various human rights violations, especially the right to life.

Accordng to, Migrant Care, an NGO advocating for the rights of Indonesian workers overseas, also condemned the execution.

Indonesian advocacy group Migrant Care said in September that the mum-of-one had been defending herself from being raped.

The assured protection of migrant workers' rights was an explicit requirement in documents signed by Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri and his Saudi counterpart Ahmed Sulaiman Al Rajhi on October 11, the rights activist said.

Speaking to Wartakota Live, the charity's executive director in Indonesia, Usman Hamid said, "For the umpteenth time Saudi Arabia has injured the diplomatic ethics of the two countries which should put forward the respect for human rights".

All in all, there are now 18 Indonesian migrant workers on death row in the Middle Eastern kingdom.

"It just isn't logical that Indonesia requests another country to release one of its citizen from the death row when Indonesia itself still practices the inhumane and violent punishment", Usman said.
