  • Flanker fighter flies as close as five feet from a RC-135 U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft which was flying in international airspace over the Baltic Sea

Earlier, the US Navy slammed Russian Federation for the actions of the Su-27 jet that intercepted the US EP-3 Aries spy plane in a manner that was deemed unsafe.

The Navy released a short video clip Monday of the Russian jet's afterburner flaring alongside the US aircraft.

United States reconnaissance planes are often taking a peek over Russian borders, unsurprisingly triggering the country's air force that makes sure the border is not crossed.

Two unsafe passes by a Russian fighter jet put a USA military aircraft at risk during flight operations over the Black Sea, Navy officials said Monday.

Pahon said there was no communication between the two aircraft throughout the 25-minute incident.

A Russian Su-27 made a risky pass ahead of a US Navy EP-3 Aries taking part in a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military exercise in global air space above the Black Sea on Monday. In training, friendly aircraft can down each other by flying too close.

"This interaction was determined to be unsafe due to the Su-27 conducting a high speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, putting at risk the pilots and crew", the statement said. The crew reported turbulence during the first pass and vibrations during the second, the Navy said. "The duration of the intercept was approximately 25 minutes".

The Russian SU-27 jet failed to establish radio contact and made two "really close" passes before engaging afterburners that shook the entire American EP-3 Aries, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon told reporters.

The Su-27 wouldn't need to go all out with afterburners to pass the propeller-driven EP-3, but the burners would likely exacerbate turbulence felt by the Navy crew.

These type of actions "put our aircrews in danger", and "there is no reason for this behavior", the spokesperson continued. Navy EP-3E Aries spy plane, it said.

While the Navy acknowledged that the Russian military "is within its right to exercise within worldwide airspace" it criticized the encounter for being "irresponsible".

The Su-27 can be used for air-to-air combat or in a bomber role.
