Russia Blames Rocket Failure on Mistake During Assembly

Russian space agency announced on Wednesday that it will launch its first manned rocket to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 3 after its failed attempt on October 1.

Russian officials believe the component was damaged during assembly.

Russian rockets have experienced an array of glitches in recent years, but the latest mishap was the first to be experienced by a manned Soyuz capsule since 1983, when a crew narrowly escaped before a launchpad explosion.

They warned that two other Soyuz rockets could be defective, and said additional checks have been introduced. When the Soyuz launch failed earlier this month, uncertainty over the ISS crew launch schedule led to speculation that the space station would have to be abandoned, at least for the time being.

The Canadian Space Agency said it is still awaiting confirmation of details regarding Saint-Jacques' mission.

The findings of an official investigation into the incident were presented at a press conference on Thursday.

The trio had originally been scheduled to blast off on December 20.

What happened during the flight?

All manned missions were put on hold until investigations behind the launch failure were completed - which put UAE's mission to send its first Emirati astronaut to the International Space Station (ISS) onboard the Soyuz MS-12 mission on April 5 into question as well. As a result, one of the side-mounted rocket boosters did not separate properly from the vehicle and collided with the rocket.

Live video of the astronauts inside showed them shaking violently with vibrations caused by the malfunction.

Despite their dramatic descent and landing, both men were recovered unharmed, the space agencies said.

"The reason for the abnormal separation. was due to a deformation of the stem of the contact separation sensor.", Skorobogatov told reporters.

Russian rockets are manufactured in Russia and then transported by rail to the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome.

The current crew working aboard the ISS since June 6 consists of Sergei Prokopyev of Russia, Serena Maria Aunon-Chancellor of the United States, and Alexander Gerst of Germany. The Soyuz is now the only rocket that is capable of sending humans to the ISS and a launch failure hasn't happened since 1983.
