Republicans keep Senate: Election results show GOP retains control of Senate

A turbulent election season that tested President Donald Trump's slash-and-burn political style against the strength of the Democratic resistance comes to a close as Americans cast ballots in the first national election of the Trump era.

Republicans are projected to retain control of the Senate after Tuesday's midterm elections, picking up seats from Democrats in states that President Trump won in 2016.

Still, other sectors that could have been expected to benefit strongly from a Trump presidency have lagged. Incumbent Democrat Tom O'Halleran's race moved from "Likely Democrat" to "Lean Democrat", as the freshmen member continues to defend a seat in a district President Donald Trump narrowly won in 2016. If Democrats are on fire, this is also the hour when the bottom could fall out for Republicans, and the House majority could be called. Republican Mike Braun defeated Democratic Sen.

The Democrats' path to the Senate was increasingly narrow, however.

They also could force Trump to scale back his legislative ambitions, possibly dooming his promises to fund a border wall with Mexico, pass a second major tax-cut package or carry out his hardline policies on trade.

In recent stops, Trump has directly targeted favourite foes House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters and argued that Democrats would plunge the country into Venezuela-like chaos.

However, the winning a majority in the Senate will be an uphill task. Individual races "will be close", she said, but because of the "quality of our candidates" and emphasis on preserving health care, "I feel confident we will win".

The party in the White House often loses seats after a president's first two years in office, even if the president isn't a controversial figure like Trump. Democrats started the night needing to flip 23 seats to retake the House.

Trump himself noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were meant to boost Republican candidates - and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020.

A full picture of the voting results will not emerge for hours, with numerous most important races considered toss-ups heading into Election Day.

Nevada could be more important, because Dean Heller is the most vulnerable Senate GOP incumbent in the nation, and Democrats probably need to win his seat to seize the majority. In the Lone Star state, Republican Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota. Nelson, 76, faced outgoing GOP Gov. Rick Scott, who poured over $50 million of his own fortune into his campaign, the most in the U.S. Indeed, the individual stocks that have gained and lost the most during his reign have little discernable link to Trump's presidency.

"I have worked at this poll the last three elections and this is the biggest turnout ever", said Bev Heidgerken, 67, a volunteer at a polling place in Davenport, Iowa. I really think it's more than just about a specific issue.

The closing days of the midterm campaign have played out with split-screen images of Democrats and Republicans emphasizing different messages to the voters they hope will show up to the polls on Tuesday.

As for the Senate race, despite Trump's deeply polarizing effect on voters, the GOP harnessed his rock-solid popularity with hard-right voters in rural, deep-red states. Liberal House member Beto O'Rourke became a national sensation with his underdog US Senate campaign but fell short in conservative Texas, and Andrew Gillum was trailing Republican Ron DeSantis in his quest to become the first African-American governor of the key swing state of Florida.

Ted Cruz, who was re-elected as a Texas governor, said: "Thank you, Texas!"

Rep. Elijah Cummings, the panel's current ranking Democrat, who is expected to become chairman in the next Congress, has signaled he would work with the administration to review prescription drug prices in an effort to lower costs for consumers, and also revisit postal reform and student debt. Bob Corker makes his exit. Republicans who dominate the state would probably prevail, but waiting for the outcome could extend the uncertainty about the Senate's party breakdown - and perhaps which side has control.
