The 23-year-old enjoyed the most prolific campaign of his career last season, netting 23 goals in all competitions as City won the Premier League title with a record 100 points.

He says he is thrilled to have penned a new deal and believes he is in the best place to continue improving his game.

"I'm delighted to sign", he told the City website. "My development here has been incredible", revealed Sterling. "I felt from the minute I got here it was the right choice for me", Sterling said. It's paid off and I'm really grateful'.

Sterling, who was born in Marverly, St Andrew, has represented England 46 times.

United endured a hard start to the new season and, prior to a recent strong run, were marooned in mid-table in the Premier League, with speculation building that Mourinho would be sacked.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously had reported that Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly struggling to reach a new agreement with their star winger Raheem Sterling. His statistics tell their own story.

Sterling's new contract is reported to make him the highest-paid British player in the world, with it purported to be worth £300,000-a-week.

"He's quick, strong and excellent in front of goal - everything a modern-day forward needs to excel. Players like David [Silva] and Sergio [Aguero] have done it year in year out, not just for their club but for their countries".

Referee Victor Kassai pointed to the spot in City's 6-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday when Sterling tripped himself up, kicking the floor trying to chip the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper.

Jamie Carragher wasn't impressed with his former club's failure to hold on to such a bright talent, tweeting in 2015: "I wish Lfc bought players as well as they sold them!"

The future: "There's definitely a lot more (to come), there's stuff I'm still working on, there's never a time where I feel this is where it stops, I always want to get better and get my numbers up, score more goals and get more assists".

"I think they are a better team, I do".
