The Los Angeles Police Department was placed on a citywide tactical alert early Friday to ensure all resources are available to assist with any evacuation orders and road closures prompted by the Woolsey Fire, according to a statement from the department.

In Southern California, the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that the fire raging through the Santa Monica Mountains was headed to the ocean.

Renowned movie director Guillermo del Toro, like many of his famous neighbors, hastily abandoned his home in Agoura Hills. "These firefighters were in the rescue mode all day yesterday".

The fast moving blaze, known as the "Camp Fire", began Thursday morning. In a matter of hours it doubled in size - turning well over 54 square miles (141 square kilometers) into ash and fields of glowing red embers.

Authorities say the Camp Fire in the north and the Woolsey Fire and Hill Fire in the south are being fanned by strong winds.

A former US Marine combat veteran opened fire in a bar packed with college students in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday night, killing 12 people and stunning a community with a reputation for safety.

A wildfire that moved so fast that firefighters couldn't hope to stop it quadrupled in size Friday after destroying several thousand buildings and leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people, authorities said.

The responding fire agencies from Ventura and Los Angeles Counties also consulted independent hazardous materials coordinators who agreed with the conclusion that toxic material from the site was unlikely to have been spread due to the fire. Also shut down were the schools of the Conejo Valley School District, headquartered in Thousand Oaks, and the Los Angeles Unified School District's Topanga Elementary Charter School.

"The whole hill's on fire", she said while crying. "We're kind of all shaking right now".

As the fast-moving fire ravaged Northern California, forcing an entire city of 27,000 to evacuate, highways were jammed with cars as people desperately tried to escape. An unspecified number of homes were destroyed there, according to local media.

But the flames didn't discriminate, burning everything from mobile homes to mansions. Televised news reports showed people trying to save a mansion by hurling buckets of water from a swimming pool onto burning brush over a fence. That includes areas of Westlake Village and the unincorporated community of Cornell.

Some of the patients were initially turned around during their evacuation because of gridlocked traffic and later airlifted to other hospitals, along with some staff, Kinney said. "Even though the wind has died down, stay on guard", he urged. And we love you for that. We haven't been told to evacuate just yet but Willow is nervous so she made me go outside and look make a daddy assessment.

He used a garden hose to douse most of the embers. Several evacuation centers were set up in nearby towns.

Fire officials have issued evacuation notices for parts of Chico, a town of 93,000 people north of Sacramento. With flames bearing down, firefighters carried people from homes and put them in empty seats of their neighbors' cars, said Carol Napoli, 74.

Her close friend and rumored girlfriend Sophia Hutchins shared a video as the duo left the property. We are prepared to evacuate as soon as we get the word.

"Certainly, we don't forget our experiences from the past", he said, "but again, we're not letting that deter us either, in what our jobs are and what our mission is".
