  • TV Asahi cancels performance of K-pop group BTS over A-bomb shirt

There have been reports of discomfort caused by a T-shirt one of the band's members previously wore.

'We apologise for disappointing fans who were looking forward to this.

BTS was slated to perform "Fake Love" and "IDOL" on the November 9 episode of TV Asashi's "Music Station", following the release of their ninth Japanese single this week.

One of Japan's biggest television stations has canceled a performance of the massively popular K-pop group BTS amid allegations that one of the band members wore a shirt that appears to show the atomic bombing of Nagaski. Despite IZ*ONE's successful debut stage on KBS's ' Music Bank' last week, some netizens are still petitioning the girl group's promotions on the station; the government petition demanding a ban on IZ*ONE from appearing on public broadcast station programs now has approximately 30,000 signatures. The producers asked the intention behind the t-shirt and we were in the process of coming to a settlement with the record label.

It is printed with the English words "Patriotism", "Our History", "Liberation" and "Korea" and features reproductions of two photographs: one showing Koreans celebrating and the other showing the mushroom cloud of the atomic bomb that...

Defenders of BTS and Jimin claimed that the shirt wasn't disrespectful to the Japanese people, and was simply a celebration of the defeat of the Japanese empire and the resulting independence of Korea.

Many have pointed out that while the controversy over the t-shirt design has been mentioned, another reason for the postponement may be the increasingly deteriorating relations between Japan and South Korea.

BTS apologised for the cancellation but made no reference to the T-shirt. Japan ruled the Korean Peninsula from 1910 until the end of Asia's involvement in World War II, which was brought about when Japan surrendered following the USA's use of two atomic bombs. When images of Jimin in the shirt went viral earlier this month, #Unforgiveable and #AtomicBomb began to trend on social media.
