Police shoot and arrest knife-wielding man in Bourke Street, Melbourne

The bomb squad was deployed to assess the area and television footage showed police combing the street for evidence.

"As (officers) got out of the vehicle they were confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them", Victoria Police Supt David Clayton said.

Police said three members of the public were stabbed, one of whom died from their injuries at the scene.

"From what we know of that individual, we are treating this as a terrorism incident", Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters on Friday night.

Footage from the scene shows a man swinging a knife at two uniformed officers near a burning vehicle before he was shot.

The area has been cordoned off and people have been asked to avoid the area. One witness said a man was stabbed in the face.

After repeatedly slashing at officers, he was shot.

The suspect was was hospitalized in critical condition.

Police were forced to shoot the man, who continually made stabbing gestures at them, near a burning vehicle.

Police were investigating the incident in Melbourne as suspected terrorism, and they were re-evaluating security plans for upcoming public events.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said officers responded to reports of a auto on fire on Bourke Street, near the corner of Swanston Street about 4.20pm.

The unidentified man was shot by police after three people were stabbed, one fatally, on Friday afternoon.

But as the attacks continued unabated, before one officer opted for lethal force, shooting the suspect in the chest. They said they heard screams and cries from the crowd before they were rushed from the area.

The unnamed assailant was said to reside in Melbourne's northwestern suburbs, but had come to Australia from Somalia in or around the 1990s, when the country was ravaged by a civil war. One died in the hospital, Ashton said.
