  • Migrant Caravan Pentagon Refuses Trump Order to Deploy US Troops to Border

Trump, who has warned of an "invasion" of the thousands of migrants now in Mexico, announced the military deployment last week, saying that up to 15,000 troops could serve in the operation.

"We have our military now at the border", Trump said as the crowd cheered.

Operation Faithful Patriot aims to block the huge groups of Central American migrants marching on foot toward the United States, where they plan to demand asylum. "But we're going to arrest those people quickly and for a long time".

The first defense official said that in its response to DHS, the Defense Department said that if Homeland Security officials still want the reserve force of U.S. troops, they should ask the White House to formally grant the Pentagon the authorities to perform those additional functions. There are reports that this deployment could cost upwards of $200 million. He anticipated that the number of active duty troops could reach 7,000 soon.

"The requests that we have from the Department of Homeland Security and CBP (Customs and Border Protection) is to build (facilities) to support CBP personnel and our military personnel", he said.

Bush ordered Operation Jump Start, which lasted from 2006 to 2008, and deployed 6,000 National Guard troops to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

It was unclear how many of those forces had taken up missions on the border, which will include support tasks like building housing for Customs and Border Protection personnel and erecting barriers.

"While DHS has discussed the need for potential assistance with force protection of CBP personnel, calling this line of support "law enforcement activities" would be factually inaccurate", the DHS official said.

One US official cautioned that a previous Trump administration request dating back to the spring for national guard troops to build facilities for migrants on military bases was still being deliberated.

As of Monday, US officials told Reuters that about 4,800 troops participating in the mission "Operation Faithful Patriot" are near the border. Mr. Trump has blasted illegal immigration in the past, and called for the importance of border security.

Trump's push to send the military to the border comes ahead of Tuesday's mid-term congressional elections and has triggered sharp reactions, with critics calling it a political stunt that misuses USA military resources. Their mission is to keep caravans of Central Americans out.
